Danh Vo is one of Denmark’s most prominent artists on the international scene today. With this exhibition we present a wide selection of Vo’s works from the last fifteen years – several of them created especially for this show. Vo himself orchestrated the display which encompasses two large exhibition rooms and spills over into the Sculpture Street and the museum’s lobby. In his art, Vo carefully selects existing everyday objects and historical artefacts, old photographs and documents, using them to link subjective, intimate narratives to wider-ranging historical and political events. Often, these narratives are filtered through his own range of experiences and memories. Sometimes Vo displays the objects exactly as he finds them. For example, he exhibits the chandelier that hung above the conference table in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs when the treaty that formally ended the Vietnam War was signed in 1973. In other works he juxtaposes and processes his found materials – as in the case of the work combining the TV, refrigerator, washing machine and wooden crucifix that his grandmother received from a relief charity and the Catholic Church when she arrived in Germany from Vietnam in 1980. Vo is interested in enduring themes such as migration, colonialism, religion and globalisation. And in how things become transformed through exchanges across time and cultures. By positing objects and images in new contexts, processing them in aesthetic and poetic ways, he paves the way for different, often critical meanings. Vo creates cracks and fissures in the ideas and conventions embedded in how we organise our world. Born in Vietnam in 1975, Danh (pronounced ya:ng) Vo arrived in Denmark at the age of four with his family, who fled Vietnam on a boat. The family originally hoped to reach the USA, but were picked up by a Mærsk freighter in the Pacific and ended up in Denmark. Vo is a graduate from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and the Städelschule in Frankfurt.
